DVD ROM Format
Students learn to plan safe and effective exercise programmes in a gym or health club environment. Through DVD tutorials and weekend workshops, the certificate will cover:
DVD 1: Section 1: Exercise and Fitness Knowledge
- Skeletal system
- Neuromuscular system
- Muscle actions
- Cardiorespiratory system
- Energy systems
- Effects and monitoring of aerobic exercise
- Concepts and components of fitness
- Pregnancy and exercise
- Physical activity considerations for the older adult.
DVD 2: Section 2: Instructing a Gym-Based Session
- Nutrition
- Warm up and cool down
- Flexibility
- Promoting physical activity and exercise adherence
- Exercise prescription - aerobic fitness; resistance training theory
- Resistance training for beginners
- Exercise prescription - hypertrophy
- Exercise techniques.
DVD 3: Section 3: Health, Safety and Professionalism in Exercise and Fitness Instruction
- Personal qualities
- Instructional skills and spotting
- Health and safety in gym instructing
- Customer service
- Professionalism and ethics.
Assessment:
Continuous assessment with tutor feedback
Entry requirements:
The Certificate in Gym Instruction can be taken without prior qualifications - but students must be at least 16 with a reasonable level of fitness as well as reading, writing and numeracy skills. Experience of free weights and resistance machines is recommended, but not essential.
Note: you will be required to attain a CPR certificate within 6 months of completing your distance learning course.
Course duration:
As with any distance learning course, students work at their own pace - but the course typically lasts around 8 weeks, including 5 weekend workshops.
The Certificate in Gym Instruction is also available in a full-time and part-time format.
