Motivation and Motivational Techniques

This course examines the subject of motivation by introducing the concept and then looking at a range of definitions. A range of theories are discussed to reach an understanding of motivation and then the two dominant techniques of motivation are explained. These explanations are backed up with practical examples and case studies. It is useful for individuals who need to influence their own or someone else's motivation levels. The main target group is Personal Trainers but would also be beneficial to sports coaches and athletes themselves.

Course content

The course explains the importance of motivation and the view that motivation is a difficult concept as it always changing. A variety of definitions of motivation are offered and then dissected. The two dominant theories of motivation are explained to reach a deeper understanding of motivation. They are intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and Maslow's hierarchy of needs.Then two major techniques of influencing motivation are examined: Goal Setting and Performance Profiling. The issues concerning goal setting are examined and then the process of goal setting is detailed. Additional information to make goal setting more effective is also detailed.The process of Performance Profiling is detailed and its uses are examined.
