Becoming a Group Fitness Instructor has never been easier. AFAA® has provided generations of instructors with practical skills and hands-on experience needed to inspire and motivate the world to move toward happier and healthier lives.

This is a hybrid of the best aspects of 1-2-1 personal training and group fitness. You’ll learn to reach more clients and earn more income. Learn how to create group training experiences that are individualised for each client’s goals – whether that’s preparing for a race, losing weight, or motivating them through a heart-pumping HIIT workout.

Course Curriculum

A Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing and Personal Training or a high level of working knowledge the fitness industry is recommended. This course also requires you to hold a CPR/AED qualification with a recognised provider (e.g. Red Cross or St John's Ambulance).

Chapter 1: The Group Fitness Industry
Learn about the state of group fitness today, as well as AFAA's history and our foundation of evidence-based practice.

Chapter 2: Foundations of Exercise Science
Understand biomechanics, its role in the development of a group fitness session, and describe the function of the muscle action spectrum.

Chapter 3: The Human Movement System
Learn about the functions of the Human Movement System, also referred to as the kinetic chain, and find out how to use this knowledge in group fitness.

Chapter 4: Integrated Fitness
Learn about the foundation for the successful development of any group fitness program.

Chapter 5: Teaching Basics
Familiarize yourself with the five components of a workout and how to identify considerations such as training intensities for popular formats.

Chapter 6: Teaching: Multi-training and Exercise Technique
Learn about different exercises that can useful for multiple formats, as well as appropriate techniques and modifications.

Chapter 7: Class Planning and Preparation
Understand how to thoughtfully plan group fitness classes to refine intended outcomes of classes.

Chapter 8: Adapting to Class Dynamics
Be prepared for unexpected variables in group fitness and know how to provide a safe experience for your members.

Chapter 9: Communication and Learning
Connect with class participants by providing participant-centered instruction that acknowledges individual needs while also serving the needs of the group.

Chapter 10: Inclusive Instruction for Special Populations
Understand how to support every participant during a workout with various considerations and modifications.

Chapter 11: Class Engagement and Motivation
Learn how to build value for class participants by engaging with them and motivating them in a way that empowers them to meet their goals.

Gain an understanding of basic nutritional information and how it may influence the work that you do.

The final exam consists of 100 questions and you must score 70% or higher to pass. It must be taken at a PSI verified test centre, which has locations across the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

Upon passing the end of the course exam, you will become an AFAA Certified Group Fitness Instructor.

Each one of the exams are 120 test questions, in which 20 are research questions and do not count toward or against the final score. Both exam have a 2-hour time limit and you must pass with a 70% or better.

The CGFI content prepares you for the NCCA-accredited exam by providing multiple quizzes throughout the course modules, along with a final practice exam.

The Athletics Fitness and Association of America (AFAA) contracted with Professional Examination Service (ProExam) to conduct a practice analysis of Certified Group Fitness Instructor (CGFIs) in 2016. This practice analysis study defines the current knowledge, skills and abilities that must be demonstrated by entry-level credential holders to safely and successfully practice. This study also serves as the “blueprint” for determining the content (performance domains) for the certification exam(s).

It is recommended that you have a Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing and Personal Training or a high level of working knowledge the fitness industry.
