With this specialisation you’ll play a vital role in keeping seniors active. You’ll learn exercise techniques designed specifically for this population and how to implement them safely and with the most positive impact on their health and wellness.

You'll also learn to meet seniors' specific needs by designing exercise programmes that use NASM's Optimum Performance Training® model.

Course Curriculum

A Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing and Personal Training or a high level of working knowledge the fitness industry is recommended.

Chapter 1: Defining The Older Adult Population
In this chapter, you will understand the population boom of older adults and the future implication of that as well as describe the current trends of the older adult injury rates and associated costs.

Chapter 2: Physiological and Anatomical Considerations of Aging
Explain the physiological changes that occur in the nervous system and describe how the musculoskeletal system changes with age. Additionally, understand the physiological changes to the cardiorespiratory system as people age.

Chapter 3: The Psychosocial Considerations of Aging
Discover how health and fitness influence the quality of life, emotional well-being, and self perception for the older adult clients.

Chapter 4: Fitness Assessments For The Active Older Adult Client
Learn the components and rationale for an integrated fitness assessment, understand how to administer a health history questionnaire and interpret the data for the health risks, and be able to comprehend the importance of dynamic posture, how to perform a comprehensive dynamic movement assessment, and how to apply the information obtained from the assessment.

Chapter 5: Exercise Safety Guidelines For Active Older Adults
After completing this chapter, you will understand safety concerns for the active older adult, be familiar with vision and hearing sensory impairments, know the recommendations when working with clients that have sensory impairments, and explain the effects of agin on thermoregulation and how to adjust exercise programming.

Chapter 6: Flexibility Guidelines For Active Older Adults
Understand the rationale for flexibility training and how to safely progress an older adult through it. Moreover, know how to apply the acute variables when performing flexibility training with older adults.

Chapter 7: Cardiorespiratory Guidelines For Active Older Adults
Find out about the rationale for cardiorespiratory training for the older adult, be able to safely progress older adults through cardiorespiratory training, know how to apply the FITTE principles when performing cardiorespiratory training, and understand how to safely apply stage and circuit training as a cardiorespiratory program for older adults.

Chapter 8: Core, Balance, and Reactive Training For Fall Prevention
Explain the injury rates and rationale for fall prevention programming and understand the rationale for core, balance, and reactive training for decreasing the risk of falls as well as being able to put it into practice with your clients.

Chapter 9: Resistance Training for Active Older Adults
Understand the rationale for resistance training for the older adult and be able to safely progress older adults through a resistance training program. The adaptations that occur during the multiple phases of the OPT model will also be taught in this chapter along with knowing his to apply the appropriate resistance training exercise based upon the different levels of the model.

Chapter 10: Programme Design For The Active Older Adult Client
Understand the variables within the Optimum Performance Training (OPT) model and be familiar with the physiological considerations when training older adult clients.

Chapter 11: Common Medical Conditions and Exercise Modifications
Describe the various chronic conditions and comorbidities associated with active older adults, understand how medical conditions affect the body, and outline exercise recommendations for active older adults with chronic conditions and comorbidities.

Chapter 12: Nutrition For Active Older Adults
Learn about the caloric requirements for optimal older client health and understand guidelines and considerations for macronutrient consumption for older adult clients in order to determine proper nutrient supplementation for these clients.

Chapter 13: Professional Development
After completing this chapter, you will understand the legal requirements when working as a personal trainer as well as NASM's Code of Professional Conduct. Additionally, you will be able to develop a plan of action to best market services.

The final exam consists of 100 questions and you must score 70% or higher to pass.

Upon passing the end of the course exam, you will become an NASM Senior Fitness Specialist (NASM-SFS)

You have 365 days from the date of purchase or date of enrollment key activation.

The exam is completed online through your NASM student portal. You have 3 initial attempts. If you fail all 3 exam attempts, a retest can be purchased.

You must get a 70% of higher to successfully pass the exam.

It is recommended that you have a Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing and Personal Training or a high level of working knowledge the fitness industry.
