The demand for youth fitness programming is at an all-time high. That’s why the NASM Youth Exercise Specialisation was created with the unique challenges of coaching younger clients in mind.

This programme will educate you on how to design safe, effective, and fun training programmes for youth clients aged between 6 and 19.

Course Curriculum

A Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing and Personal Training or a high level of working knowledge the fitness industry is recommended.

Chapter 1: Rationale For Youth Fitness Training
Understand the different terms that identify the youth population and be able to define and explain the difference between overweight and obesity.

Chapter 2: Anatomical and Physiological Considerations For Youth
Learn the key physiological differences between children, adolescents, and adults, understand how boys and girls undergo various hormonal changes at different times, and the implications this may have on exercise capacity, and differentiate exercise capacity between youth and adults.

Chapter 3: Psychological Considerations For Youth
Understand the five key traits of people who are high achievers, and those who are successful in making lifestyle changes.

Chapter 4: Fitness Assessment For Youth
Learn the importance of subjective and objective assessments for youth and understand the special considerations for test administration in youth.

Chapter 5: Youth Flexibility Guidelines
After completing this chapter, you will understand the general guidelines, options, and rationale behind flexibility for youth.

Chapter 6: Cardiorespiratory Training For Youth
Understand the rationale behind and the training guidelines for cardiorespiratory for youth. Additionally, be able to develop fun cardiorespiratory training programmes for the youth!

Chapter 7: Core and Balance Training Guidelines For Youth
Find out about the importance of core and balance training for youth and be able to determine the appropriate core and balance exercises according to the OPT model.

Chapter 8: Plyometric, Speed, Agility, and Quickness Training for Youth
Learn about the importance of plyometric and speed, agility, and quickness training (SAQ) for youth and be able to determine thee appropriate exercises to incorporate into a youth programme based on the OPT model.

Chapter 9: Resistance Training For Youth
Familiarize yourself with the benefits of youth resistance training, dispel myths about the safety of youth engaging in resistance training, understand general resistance training guidelines for youth, and be able to design and implement a safe, effective, and progressive resistance training programme for youth.

Chapter 10: Integrated Programme Design For Youth Clients
Understand the basic levels and phases of the Optimum Performance Training (OPT) model that health and fitness professionals primarily use when training youth. Additionally, be able to use the ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) method, and understand the Borg scale while being able to correlate circuit training with cardiorespiratory training.

Chapter 11: Nutrition For Youth
Understand the effects of obesity on the youth population, recognize the current trends of youth eating habits, and be aware of basic guidelines for weight management for youth.

Chapter 12: Professional Development
Learn the legal and ethical responsibilities related to a health and fitness professional working with youth.

The final exam consists of 100 questions and you must score 70% or higher to pass.

Upon passing the end of the course exam, you will become an NASM Youth Exercise Specialist (NASM-YES)

You have 365 days from the date of purchase or date of enrollment key activation.

The exam is completed online through your NASM student portal. You have 3 initial attempts. If you fail all 3 exam attempts, a retest can be purchased.

You must get a 70% of higher to successfully pass the exam.

It is recommended that you have a Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing and Personal Training, an NASM-CPT qualification, or a high level of working knowledge of the fitness industry.
